Why Medicare Coverage Could Harm Traditional Medicine
There's a lot of excitement in the acupuncture community about potential Medicare coverage. On the surface, it seems like progress - greater accessibility, more legitimacy, wider acceptance. But I need to share why I'm deeply concerned about what this means for the future of traditional medicine.
The Hidden Cost of "Progress"
Here's what many aren't considering: We're celebrating the chance to opt out of a system we never wanted to join in the first place. Think about that for a moment.
The "recognition" Medicare offers isn't really recognition of our medicine at all. Instead, it's an invitation to break down our holistic approach into billing codes and checkboxes. It's asking us to slice up thousands of years of wisdom into 15-minute increments that can be easily measured - while missing everything that actually matters.
Beyond the Checkbox
When I sit with a patient, I'm not thinking about billing codes or documentation requirements. I'm listening to their story, observing their patterns, and drawing upon centuries of clinical wisdom to help restore balance to their system. This process can't be reduced to a series of checkboxes without losing its essence.
The Real Risk
Healthcare philosopher Ivan Illich warned us about the industrialization of medicine. He saw how modern healthcare systems can transform:
- Healers into technicians
- Patients into customers
- Sacred healing spaces into paperwork factories
Every hour we spend learning billing codes is an hour not spent deepening our understanding of medicine. Every minute spent documenting for Medicare is a minute not spent truly listening to our patients.
A Different Path Forward
We don't need Medicare's permission to practice our medicine.
We don't need validation from a system that fundamentally misunderstands what we do.
We don't need to fragment our medicine to fit someone else's framework.
Instead, we need to focus on what's already working:
- Community acupuncture clinics making treatment affordable for everyone
- Patient-centered private practices where healing relationships can flourish
- Success measured in lives transformed, not insurance claims processed.
Preserving What Matters
Think of our medicine as an ancient forest. Medicare coverage might look like a mighty tree offering shelter, but embracing it means clear-cutting parts of our forest to build a more "efficient" structure. But our medicine, like that forest, is already complete. It's alive with complexity, wisdom, and healing potential that can't be captured in diagnostic codes.
The path forward isn't through Medicare. It's through preserving and sharing our medicine in its true, complete form. Let's choose to protect what makes our medicine special, rather than sacrifice it on the altar of institutional acceptance.
